2 ODD BIRDS

Sara Rockburn

2 ODD BIRDS is a culmination of an artist’s passion to bring you unique, nature-inspired jewelry. With the use of natural stones and antiqued brass, I bring you my vision. Totally sourced in the United States I hand pick each stone and start my process from there. Complimenting my stones with brass that has been oxidized gives an aged weathered appeal, as if the stones were dug from the ground.

I do not pride myself on pretty, shiny, and perfect but more like Cleveland my pieces are unique, raw, and have imperfections. My passion is to transform these pieces into beautiful wearable jewelry for you to love and appreciate.

Rachel web, Josh web | Facebook | Etsy | Instagram

Alt Pop: Glam Pop Figures + Art offers unique handmade items such as custom toys + figures, holiday cards, ornaments, small originals, wood blocks prints, coasters, and some wearable accessories. The shop also offers items and accessories made from original artwork like prints, button packs, and die-cut stickers. The work is inspired by 90’s pop culture, anime, and Japanese street style and strives to be accessible all people.

Alt Pop strives on what some may consider Pop Surrealism but Rachel refers to it more specifically as Glam Pop. The work is done with meaning and messaging airing on the side of light-heartedness, punch, and light humor. It is a more accessible and relatable way to reach the public, not to mention the highly influential styles of the 90’s pop culture, anime, and Japanese street style. Rachel has dedicated half her life to art so far and was educated as a graphic designer. She has lately incorporated more digital work into her process.

This fall, Cleveland-based publisher 1984 Publishing (also a Bazaar vendor!) releases “Altered Value: The Art of Funny Money,” a 224-page, lavish, hardbound book collecting more than 150 of Josh’s Funny Money drawings. In addition to selling signed copies of the book, the table features die-cut stickers, Funny Money-themed holiday cards (money holders), buttons, signed prints, original art, gift items and more. Funny Money is an ongoing project exploring the value of creative expression by drawing directly on our society’s mutually agreed upon symbol of value.

I have been a collector of ideas, skills and techniques for 45 years. And although my creative journey has led me to many places I always seem to end up back at personal adornment. My jewelry at this point in my life is a combination of enameling, metal smithing and lamp work (there may be a few other skills thrown in there). I like jewelry to be low maintenance to wear and keep up. And although my products run the gambit of style from contemporary to funky or vintage, they are all made with quality materials and workmanship. Also, having been a teacher of glass bead making, metal smithing and jewelry construction for over 25 years, I love to share my knowledge and passion for my art.

I embarked upon the first leg of the journey that is Fear’s Confections just over four years ago, in March of 2010, as a home-based mail order and catering business. With growing demand, our small home kitchen was quickly overrun with candy and brownies piled onto every flat surface. On August 4th 2013, Fear’s Confections made the leap to an out-of-home production and retail space. This progression allowed for the expansion of product lines and better service for our local customers. In addition to this store front, our products are also available in three other retail locations in the Cleveland area as well as online for pickup or delivery with SkipTheDishes.com.

A wide variety of handmade chocolates are also available. Caramels, toffees, truffles, and pecan turtles are just a small sampling of what we create. All of the products offered are made in small batches using the freshest possible ingredients with no additional preservatives giving them a truly homemade essence. My products as well as my store reflect my rockabilly personality through a clearly vintage feel, with a splash of modern edge. Everything is made by hand with the care most expect to have been long forgotten by today’s mass produced disposable society. It is my passion to create captivating jewelry that is alluring, versatile, and vibrant with the feelings of pure joy and inspiration – talismans or amulets to wear throughout the day. It is my intent that this will be passed on to the wearer. Why? If you are happy, you will naturally spread it like wild fire to everyone around you. And then they will feel good too! I use captivating, natural gemstones, lustrous sterling and fine silver, gold-filled and copper metals in my designs. Why? Historically precious stones and metals have been used to embue leaders with strength, courage, will and other positive qualities. And in today’s terms, precious metals and gemstones are eco-friendly. They are healthy, naturally beautiful, and feel wonderful against your skin.

Growing up in Sarajevo, I learned at an early age from my mother and grandmother about the healing and healthful properties of herbs. We didn’t resort to harsh chemicals but rather to the natural, time tested remedies of our ancestors. I learned how to grow these herbs and how to turn them into infusion oils to make products to clean, moisturize, heal and protect the body. Coming to America in May of 1999, I brought my skills and passions for healthful living with me. I am very proud of my garden–planting chamomile, lemon balm, mint, calendula, lavender etc. I then take the time to dry the herbs and make infusion oils as the base for my products. I am so proud to make homemade products that are PH neutral (not too acidic or alkaline) that have made a difference in my life and in the lives of others. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I can help provide healing or quality of life using Mother Nature’s own gifts that we have been given.

Central to my idea of Hazelmade is that I want to love the products I create and use them in my daily life. I seek quality materials with unique designs to add artistic style to each room of a home. I use an eclectic combination of direct metal, lost wax casting, gem cutting, and enameling techniques to create my jewelry. I tend to layer adventurous experimentation over a foundation of traditional, sometimes ancient, methods as I bring my designs into reality. I use reclaimed metals and found objects like old silverware alongside precious gemstones in my work. I hand forge and enamel scrap yard copper and pair it with sterling silver. I often make my own mechanisms, like clasps and pin backs, entirely by hand.

This led me to work only with unique objects and old vintage jewelry to create one of a kind pieces. The sky is the limit and creativity key. Each piece is a one of a kind creation with its own personality and attitude: a piece of walking and wearable art. An added plus: the recycling (upcycled) of unwanted objects into something new and vibrant.

Plants and botanical ingredients simply feel better on the skin. In addition, they work with skin naturally, nutritiously and unforced; feeding and transforming it from the inside out. I am focused on skin moisturizers – face oils, serums and natural creams – that comes together based on skin physiology. It took many months of R&D, trials and errors to come to the right percentages of each botanical oil and to match the the natural sebum of our skin! It feels light and yet rich at the same time, soaks in beautifully and skin is transformed after just one use. To complete our skincare line, we offer cleansers, makeup removers, floral water toners and masks. Our products are truly natural, vegan and cruelty free:

*NO dyes and colorants: We use clay that are found in mother earth
*NO chemical preservatives (parabens, etc): We use good manufacturing techniques and natural preservatives to ensure a decent shelf life for our products
*NO fragrances (phthalates): We expertly develop house blends of essential oil, both for their therapeutic benefits and beautiful scents

Every single ingredient in our product is there for a therapeutic reason. We do not use fillers, binders, glues, opacifier to augment the way our products look and feel.

I found that I liked doing a lot of different things and that is OK. That is how the name came about: miss wanderer. I go through this creative world without one purpose or direction. I go where my passion takes me.

Sweet Punkette started about four years ago when I was getting a lot of requests for some items I had made for my wedding reception. Combining my love of music and recycling, I take un-useable, unplayable vinyl records and create something new! My clocks have been my best seller by far! The clocks made from the 45’s are all one of a kind and made from the actual single, so customers are always so excited to find their favorite song. If I don’t have your song, I can more than likely find it for you. I even have a back-stock of about 1,000 singles available to be made into clocks, so special orders are welcome! The LP clocks and cuff bracelets are hand painted with mostly Cleveland inspired art, including the Cleveland sports teams. All of the clocks make awesome gifts! I just started making (also one-of-a-kind) earrings and necklaces from the records, using parts of the original LP labels, and have been a success! My shop name comes from my nickname given to me by Betsey Johnson. When I worked for her, she would call me her “Sweet Punkette”.

While there is a growing and vibrant community of chainmaille artists and it is becoming more popular, I strive to always keep my work different and evolving by using other mediums and techniques, such as hand-painting or altering the appearance of the metals with different chemicals and patinas, and incorporating hand cut metal pieces and pendants.

As a relief printmaker, I create original limited-edition fine art prints and other block-printed crafts from hand-carved linoleum blocks. My prints are largely narrative and are a reflection of a relentlessly curious mind that’s always hungry for a good story. These works feature a variety of subjects: celebrations of the human form; figures from literature & mythology; contemporary heroes; and the copious flora & fauna that surround me in my northern Kentucky studio. Using oil-based relief inks I print my original compositions onto nearly any flat surface I can find, but I stick mostly with archival papers, wood and canvas. My block-printed crafts include canvas wall hangings that I sew myself, pennants, coasters, as well as free-standing sculptural prints on wood panels cut with my handy scroll saw.

The Hillson Nut company has been a Cleveland Landmark since 1935! You probably have had our nuts before and didn’t know it…..Mitchells, Velvet Tango Room, Lilys Handmade Chocolates, Sweet Moses, B. A. Sweeties, East Coast Custard, and Honey Hut are just some of the Cleveland favorites that use our nuts. Robert Earl Clifton Hillson began the business in 1935. The Hillson Nut Company was born of a strong work ethic and commitment to providing a tasty and healthful snack for customers, and ingredient to the many dairies existing at the time. Robert, one of twelve children born to immigrants George Hillson and Rose Burnham of the Boston area, brought in his brother Edward soon afterwards to help in the growing business. By 1956, the business had grown considerably and more space was needed. The Hillsons moved the business to its current location on West 71st Street. This historical building once housed an enormous power generator to convert the coal fired trains to electric power for cleaner air within the city as part of the Cleveland Terminal Project in the 1930’s.

I free hand intricate designs into well known images with sharpie makers on Bristol board and also the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. Well known images such as animals, Pittsburgh skyline, food, hobbies, all sorts of things. I then print my originals as waterproof stickers. They are great for the car, waterbottle, phone, all sorts of things, just as long as the surface is smooth. I’ve realized in the last few years of my countless shows I have been a vendor at, they are very popular among all ages and not just young kids!
